Romance of Lavender

As part of a talented project team, we are very pleased to be listed among ‘the best of the best’ again this year in the Pinnacle Awards.

Our entry features this stunning home in Maryland, a project that was unique in many ways, and it was a pleasure to add our bronzed Vertex slide to this wonderful vista.

The client wanted a modern home with an old world feel to it, so we were required to combine and balance the amenities of modern technology with the use of rustic materials, to give a sense that the entire home and garden had been there for hundreds of years.

With the house completed, the client had a clear brief for the pool and gardens. Through a great collaboration between the owners, architect and landscape architect, every effort was made throughout the design process to connect the inside to the outdoors, through thoughtful spatial and geometric relationships, the use of masonry walls comprised of the stone veneer on the house to connect the architecture to the land, and the repetition of materials and decorative devices from within the house to the outdoors.

Old meets new

Every aspect of the project demanded the highest quality craftsmen and attention to detail. Built with modern construction methods and state of the art technology throughout, the house and grounds feature architectural materials that are either reclaimed, such as the roof tiles, or weathered or textured to look old. These were sourced and assembled by the interior design firm to successfully capture the old world charm that the client had talked about since our initial meetings.

Pool and vista

At approximately 24’ x 62’ in size, the pool is the focal point of the back yard, and acts as a piece of artwork that anchors the landscape before giving way to the rolling horse pastures beyond.

Adding to this vista is a custom-made sculptural pool slide. Hand-made in polished stainless steel, it features a bronzed finish that will develop a natural patina over time, complementing the client’s vision for a vintage feel throughout. Sitting comfortably against the warm tones of the surrounding stonework and terracotta pots, the slide adds a year-round sculptural feature. It’s internally water-cooled, using water recycled through the pool’s filter system, to ensure it is always cool enough to use.

Unpretentious gardens

The furnishings, seating and antique planters around the garden and pool area are subtle and fade to the back as another textural layer to enhance the overall inviting nature of this beautiful garden.

The client wanted to keep the gardens welcoming, with a strong juxtaposition of manicured and wild planting. It was important to them to avoid any sense of pretentiousness or formality in the design of the garden. It just needed to feel comfortable and inviting, with plenty of colour in the planting, which was achieved in the perennials, climbing roses, and the romance of lavender throughout the garden. The largest trees were already there, and these played an important part in creating the mature garden that the client wanted from the start.
